The State Melnikovs Museum and international engineering and design company Arup have signed a memorandum of the long-term cooperation for a complex examination of the Melnikov House. On one hand, the memorandum reflects the intention of the Melnikovs Museum to provide the necessary scientific research for preserving the monument and, on the other hand, Arup’s intention to carry out a technical analysis of the House condition according to its construction features, and the current state of the soil with dynamics of its changes.
The first step of this cooperation will be a detailed study of all avaliable information concerning the House, including hydrogeotechnical information and information about the construction near the House over the past twenty years. As a result of this first step should be a document describing the amount of work, it's priority and the urgency of subsequent research. The next step will be a detailed external and internal examination of the House with the purpose to identify its current technical condition and possible problems with structural integrity.
"The restoration works of the Melnikov House are as unique as the house itself; typical solutions may harm the monument. We are pleased that Arup, one of the largest and most respected companies in the world, which has an experience in the development and implementation of complex engineering and construction solutions, has agreed to do the examination of the Melnikov House", said Pavel Kuznetsov, director of the State Melnikovs Museum.
"The Melnikov House examination is an important challenge for us. It’s a masterpiece of one of the greatest architects of the XX century, which was ahead of his time for decades. The creator of this masterpiece was probably the only one who knew all its design features. The comprehensive examination for us is an opportunity to get more experience and knowledge. The status of a leading engineering company in the world is a big responsibility, we always have to prove it”, said David Owens, Head of Communications Group of Arup in Europe.
