Schusev State Museum of Architecture presents an exhibit of the Swiss artist Reto Emch Ruin Installation / Jurassic Town. When drops of water fall on the floor of the Museum of Architecture, seeping through the flooring of the Ruins annex, Reto Emch hears it as a symphony. The artist created an installation with the thinnest of boundaries between the real and the staged ruins. All he needed was to stress the acoustics and visual images to create the illusion of disintegration and decay to go back into the past.
The Ruin Installation is part of Jurassic Town – a large project by Reto Emch. With a series of photographs made in 2000 – 2018 the artist urges to take a new look at urban space all over the world from Moscow to his native Solothurn, located at the foothills of the Jura Mountains in Switzerland. Just as the events of the Steven Spielberg movie Jurassic Park, the motives of the photos are controversial. Reto Emch brings it to our attention that there are creatures of different epochs coexisting in the cities, just as people and dinosaurs do in the fantastical movie.
Reto Emch was born in 1961 in the city of Solothurn in Switzerland. From 1986 to 1991 he assisted Jean Tinguely in building his famous kinetic sculptures. RetoEmch’s artwork encompasses installation, sculpture, painting and photography. Emch devises expansive installations for ruins and abandoned factories, for chapels, parks, cellar vaults, historic hospitals or ballrooms. His works have been on exhibit in numerous cities of Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland.
